Back TWO the old School House

The summer flew by, I cannot believe the kids are already back in school. It is so quiet in the house, makes me sad! For a year now I have been wanting to do a session in this most adorable school house located 16 miles from my house. It is in amazing condition thanks to the support of many locals. Mrs. Kreger (who taught my children) is one of the ladies who helps maintain the school along with Margaret Kreger. I called Mrs. Kreger up to see if it would be possible for me to get in there and she was more than thrilled with the idea. Margaret met Nikki and I there and gave the kids a history lesson on the school as well as Nikki and I. I love history and stories from the past. We all learned so much that day! what a fantastic way to start off the school year.
We brought along a few books, apples, cookies and a few other props, but really everything we needed was already in the school. Nikki provided the models, they blew my socks off with their ideas and creativity. Christian is one of the funniest kiddos I know, I love his ears, freckles and those dimples... Callahan was right by my side snapping her own pictures, she loves photography and could not wait to put some on instagram, what a sweetheart.

HISTORY of the S.S. Spohn #2

It was built in 1933 and was used until 1965. It is the only standing one room schoolhouse in the entire district. It is located in Harris Hill. Children ranging from Grade One - Grade Eight walked up to 3 miles to come to school. During the Spring and Fall children would miss school to help with farming. Reading, Writing, Math, Science, Baseball and other playground games were important back in the day as well as Christmas concerts. It was apart of every little boy's wardrobe to have a "pocketknife" along with him to school. That is why you see many carvings in the desks. In the early 90's a committee formed and people donated their time, money and their heart to fix up and restore this old schoolhouse from its broken windows and stolen desks etc. Once every year the elementary classes travel to this schoolhouse for their annual "pioneer days" and they participate in a school day much like it would have been... from the bus letting them off to walk a mile to get there... packing a lunch in a pail with no wrappers or plastic... learning from the old books... recess outside learning playground games and they even get to learn how to churn.

A huge thank to the two Mrs. Kregers for your time.
